Kitchen Vagabond is an unpretentiously narrated culinary journey that will satisfy, entertain and teach foodies and non-foodies alike. David Gilbert's easy writing style keeps readers attention with a down to earth tone and dry wit. The chapters of the book map out the different passages of his life that start as an adolescent experimenting with scrambled eggs, who grows up to become an executive chef in kitchens across the globe, and includes the romance of kisses from A-list celebrities over freshly prepared sushi rolls. The recipes at the end of each chapter are diverse and highlight some of his favorite food memories.
However, don't be fooled, this book isn't just about food and cooking. It offers lessons in strong leadership that are applicable far beyond the kitchen. Between the kitchen anecdotes are insightful observations that show David growing as a chef who is able to turn sub-par teams into high performing ones while also knowing when it's best to move on.
With the landscape and his location constantly changing his love of locally sourced food and the relationships with the farmers producing them is undying throughout the book. My only disappointment was that the book ended knowing that there were even more adventures to come.
In an era with plenty of inspiration via social media/internet, it is seldom to find a truer interpretation than the written word. David Gilbert has found a way to embody the pride and passion that us culinarians have for our vocation which we often describe as blood, sweat and tears. "Kitchen Vagabond" invokes the emotional journey that many of us have faced entering the tan tiled floors of our first kitchens to the racing heartbeats of running the pass. I found myself immersed feeling the warmth of the light and smells from Amsterdam in the summer to frustration of the barstool democracy of the sultry streets of St. Louis. Gilbert has beautifully put pen to paper and painted a picture of ones' love and emotion to the inevitable acceptance and triumph over the seedy underbelly of cutthroat business and its fallible sometimes-humoring reality. Among the likes of Anthony Bourdain, Gilbert has shown us how it feels to grow and develop a talent that is sometimes hidden inside of us. What is perhaps the most intriguing part of "Kitchen Vagabond" is the evolving "mind map." As the story grew so did Gilberts sketches on his life path reinforcing the emotional connection of the words on each page. Gilbert has brought the back of house world to light by simply cracking the shell of the industry into his "battle-scarred" frying pan, bringing forth many of my own memories of my early kitchen day. As I turned the final page a culmination of emotions began forming and I found myself wondering for myself................"what's next?"
Chef David Gilbert's genuinely enthusiastic voice shines in his book, and what a fun ride he pulls you on! I think many diners don't give a second thought to who's in the kitchen and the talented chefs behind much of the great food that ends up on plates. I found it incredibly valuable to learn about the hard work and sacrifices those in this industry make. It's truly a calling. It's fascinating and exciting to learn about how David ended up where he is now. He clearly has a drive and passion few chefs today have. Through his vivid writing, the people is his life are truly characters who come alive, and all the places really interesting--from the beginning Tex-Mex restaurant adventure (ouch!) to cooking for the Golden Globes (wow!)--and everything in between, you feel like you're right there with him at every time and place. David's wit and charm will make you smile as you read his book. Lastly, as for his talent, his Best Chef Southwest nomination from the James Beard Foundation Awards this year was definitely well deserved!
This book made my day! Kitchen Vagabond is a charming book that takes the reader through the adventures of Chef David Gilbert. His passion for food is infectious and the book made me want to get out there and see the world. If you enjoy food, travel and and are looking for an inspirational read to get you motivated to get more out of your own life...this book is it. The book also includes some interesting sketches that map out his journey and lead the reader from one chapter to the next.
